Workshops 2009-2010

PWG Program for 2009-2010: Fiber Arts from Start to Finish

Program Committee members: Judi Jetson (VP Programs), Penny Hunter, Lynn Johnson, Liz Jones, Kathy Malloy, Lucy Parks, Caroline Tacker.

Goals:

  • Encourage 1 or 2 new interest groups (dyeing, ) by building skills and mentoring;

    · Focus programs and workshops on the basics, i.e. weaving, spinning and dyeing;

    · Publicize special programs (ROC Day, workshops) to recruit new members;

    · Organize a challenge that leads to display-able work (for State Fair, Clearwater Library, FTWG) 

September 19 - Raising and Spinning Natural Fibers. Members' panel & photos/slide shows about raising sheep (Kathy Malloy), alpacas (Pat Finke) and cotton (Carolyn Tacker). Demos of spinning on drop spindle (Lucy Parks), spinners will bring wheels and spindles and let non-spinners try it out. Carding and fiber blending demos (bring Guild carder).

    Sept 19th - PWG Fiber Potluck Challenge – assemble and handout packets (Assembly Committee chaired by Liz Jones includes Diane Drutkowski, Lynn Johnson and Nanci Garling). Members volunteering to bring items include Judy Saitta, Beverly Plett, Ruth Leaders, Kathy M (fiber), Liz J, Nanci G (fiber and ?), Diane D (ribbon) and Sandy Carr.

October 17 - Planning a Project.  Questionnaire (what type are you?) and discussion (Judi will facilitate) on color, structure and texture. Begin 10-minute Structure-of-the-month* (thru April).

    October 17th noon – 4pm - PWG Collection - member-led mini-workshops (coordinated by Caroline Tacker) all afternoon: i.e. koolaid dyeing, project planning, designing a warp, weaving w/out a loom, collage cards, magic loop and knitting tricks. 

November 21- Painting warps and wefts. Slide show and talk by Kathy Roig on warp painting techniques, sources of inspiration for weaving, and weaving on a draw loom.

    Workshop at Heritage Village – Warp It, Paint It, Weave It! with Kathy Roig, Nov 21 (afternoon) and Nov 22nd (10am – 4pm) Cost: $60 plus $25 materials fee. 

December 12 - Holiday party/potluck and Members' Show. Our Annual Members' Show (Lucy will manage) will be complimented with slideshows on travel to other countries.  State Fair entries due. 

January 16 – Hands on Dyeing fiber and yarn. Talk by Betsy Blumenthal on buying or dyeing your warps and wefts, and incorporating multi-colored yarns in your work. A mini-workshop will be held that afternoon from noon – 4pm on Double-Dyeing, a delightfully simple and exciting way to create lots of related colors (fee $20).

    Workshop at Dunedin Fine Arts Center – Warp Dyeing and Collapse Scarf with Betsy Blumenthal, Jan 16 (afternoon), Jan 17 and 18 (10am – 4pm) Cost $75 plus materials. 

    ROC Day - January 9 (includes natural dyeing workshop) – Penny Hunter, coordinator.  Free. 

February 20 – Weaving Tips and Tricks. How to adapt something from a magazine to what you have in your stash. Tension, selvedges, how to work with rags (California rags demo). Speaker and hands-on program on Card or Tablet Weaving.  

March 13 - Auction. No program except show-and-tell of PWG Challenge items (which will then go to FTWG for Guild exhibit).  

April 17 - Edges & Finishing. Members panel showing techniques for edges of rugs, scarves & wall pieces. Washing tips and tricks. Talk on what judges look for in a show. Hands on finishing...bring a UFO.  

May 15 - Photographing and selling your work. Panel of members from PWG, Surface Design Guild, gallery owner to talk about what sells, pricing, etc. Photographer to take our pictures :)
